An SR-22 is proof of insurance sent to the DMV to prove your financial responsibility (that you have current insurance coverage). An SR-22 is an addendum added to an insurance policy,. Please note, not all insurance companies offer an SR-22. The other thing you will want to be aware of, is since the SR-22 is not a special policy it would be wise to shop your auto insurance.
An SR-22 maybe required if you have a DUI/DWI, get a ticket for reckless driving, driving without insurance or other offenses. The judge will may suspend your license and an SR-22 would be a way for you to re-instate your license and allows you to drive legally. The judge may require you to carry your SR-22 for a certain period of time. It is important that if you are required to have an SR-22 that you keep your insurance a priority, as if you let your insurance lapse, the state will be notified and you may have to re-start the time to carry your SR-22.
